2017 Election Survey Ward 7

As part of our ongoing efforts to promote safe cycling infrastructure in Calgary, Calgarians for Cycle Tracks conducted a candidate survey in key wards for the 2017 municipal election. Calgary has made significant progress since 2013 with the opening of the Cycle Track Network, which has logged over a million trips, increased the proportion of people cycling downtown as well as the number of female, youth and elderly riders.

But we know the network is incomplete. It ends abruptly at 17th Avenue SW, 11th Street SW,  4th Street SE and 3rd Avenue SW. That's why it's important that the next City Council we elect understands the importance of extending the network to bring safe cycling infrastructure to more neighbourhoods.

2.    Do you support addressing gaps in safe bicycle infrastructure in more communities in your ward by building bike lanes and cycle tracks?

I strongly believe in supporting more cycling infrastructure in our  city. As a cyclist, and one that has been bit by a car while  cycling, I do believe in the importance of safer alternatives.    

I also believe we need to do a better job at implementing a cycling  strategy. There is no need to make this an ""us"" vs ""them"", ""car"" vs  ""bike"" issue. The vast majority of options to improve cycling need  not negatively impact drivers (of which cyclists are also most often  drivers at one point or another) - and implementation of bike routes  can often address additional issues in a positive way.    

For example, the city is planning a bike lane on 20th Ave NW from  Winston Heights to Banff Trail. This is an incredibly busy vehicle  corridor with extensive utilization of parking on both sides of the  avenue along most of the stretch in question. In this instance, one  row of parking would need to be removed and cyclists would be  required to be next to fast moving vehicles in at least one  direction. Apart for getting east to west, there is nothing that is  beneficial for cyclists to use this street, few to no shops for most  of the stretch.    

Skip down to 19th Ave and the issue is far different. The avenue is  not well used, providing drivers a bit of an expressway, causing the  streets to be considered unsafe for both young  families and elderly  residents, which are chock a block full in these neighbourhoods.  

When asked if it would be desirable to make this avenue a bike route  - which would not require taking out any parking - but simply  designating the avenue a bike route with additional signage and  potentially also reducing the allowable speed limit for the length,  residents were very happy and supportive. Similar bike routes along  2nd St NW have also been implemented to great success, at little  expense and excellent utilization.    

This is how I believe we can do better for everyone at the city - by  listening to what all the concerns are, we can often coordinate  solutions that actually address several issues at once with out  alienating subsets of our city.
